Authorised Gas Tester Training - Level 3

Authorised Gas Tester - Level 3 This 'Authorised Gas Tester' Level 3 suite of modules is designed to provide personnel with an awareness of the knowledge and skills required in order to safely test for oxygen levels and flammable or toxic atmospheres.

You will be introduced to the properties and hazards of gas, the regulations and procedures designed to keep you safe, types of gas detection and respiratory protection equipment and it's safe use. You will also be shown the importance of accurately interpreting and documenting the results of a gas test.

This level 3 training will also guide you through the additional requirements and hazards when testing for flammable gas in preparation for hot work and is required for personnel involved in safety observer and fire watch duties.

Please note: Depending on the level of Authorised Gas Tester Training you are taking, you will see a different combination of modules.

Module 1 - Understanding Gases

Module 5c - Gas Testing for Hot Work with Fire Watch

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Define what is meant by 'hot work'
  • Identify the hazards associated with hot work
  • Describe the elements of a safe system of work that are relevant to hot work
  • List the responsibilities of an Authorised Gas Tester
  • Describe how to site monitoring and detecting equipment
  • Describe how gas may arrive at the work site
  • List the responsibilities of a Safety Observer and Fire Watch
  • Describe how to initiate an emergency response

Approximate duration: 30 minutes.

Module 1 - Understanding Gases

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • List the main characteristics of a gas
  • Describe the effects of vapour density on gas movement
  • Describe the effects of neutral buoyancy on gas movement
  • Define the hazards of oxygen deficient and oxygen enriched atmospheres
  • List the hazards and properties of flammable gases
  • Describe how Lower Explosive Limits are defined
  • List the production operations that require testing for flammable and toxic gases
  • Describe how Workplace Exposure Limits are defined
  • Differentiate between Long and Short Term Workplace Exposure Limits

Module 2 - Regulations and Procedures

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Identify the regulations governing dangerous gases in the workplace
  • Describe the potential implications of not adhering to relevant legislation
  • Describe the potential implications of not adhering
