Authorised Gas Tester Training - Level 1

Authorised Gas Tester - Level 1 This 'Authorised Gas Tester' Level 1 suite of modules is designed to provide personnel with an awareness of the knowledge and skills required in order to safely test for oxygen levels and flammable or toxic atmospheres.

You will be introduced to the properties and hazards of gas, the regulations and procedures designed to keep you safe, types of gas detection and respiratory protection equipment and it's safe use. You will also be shown the importance of accurately interpreting and documenting the results of a gas test.

This level 1 training will also guide you through the additional requirements and hazards when working in and around confined spaces.

Please note: Depending on the level of Authorised Gas Tester Training you are taking, you will see a different combination of modules.

Approximate duration: 180 minutes.

Module 1 - Understanding Gases

Module 5a - Gas Testing for Confined Spaces

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Define what is meant by 'confined space'
  • Identify the hazards associated with confined space entry
  • List the responsibilities of an Authorised Gas Tester
  • Describe how to site monitoring and detecting equipment
  • List the correct sequence of gas testing
  • Describe how to adequately test a confined space
  • List the responsibilities of a Safety Observer
  • Describe how to initiate an emergency response

  • List the main characteristics of a gas
  • Describe the effects of vapour density on gas movement
  • Describe the effects of neutral buoyancy on gas movement
  • Define the hazards of oxygen deficient and oxygen enriched atmospheres
  • List the hazards and properties of flammable gases
  • Describe how Lower Explosive Limits are defined
  • List the production operations that require testing for flammable and toxic gases
  • Describe how Workplace Exposure Limits are defined
  • Differentiate between Long and Short Term Workplace Exposure Limits
